Gretchen Cowie: Fiber Processing

Part 1 of 3 part series taking raw wool to a finished product.

Fiber Processing: In this session, learn to take the fiber off the animal to usable fleece, using processes such as skirting, washing, drying, combing and carding.

Part 2: July 6th noon-3:30pm   Spinning and Plying: see what it takes to go from fiber roving to yarn. We will look at all the different tools one uses to take you from fiber roving to a yarn. Using wheels and drop spindles to learn how to spin a single thread. Then take our singles and learn the proper methods for plying to make yarn.

Part 3: July 13th noon-3:30pm Yarn finishing and weaving. After you have made a yarn, it is time to finish it, making it a perfect skein of yarn. Learn how to wet finish yarn. We will also look at what local plants could be used for naturally dying yarn. There will also be a weaving demonstration and  hands on experience weaving.
