10/3-11/15 – Theresa Heinz (Painting with Paper – Printmaking and Collage Converging) – Closing reception 11/15/25: 11am – 1pm
ARTIST’S STATEMENT and WORK PROCESS
Collage allows me to “paint with paper,” creating immediate color
for backgrounds. It also results in a diverse surface on which to
paint, full of unexpected texture. Collage like life, is multi-layered
with each layer or experience effecting the others.
Harkening back to my landscape painting past, I work according
to our four seasons, the crow series being created this past
winter. Drawn in by their inky blackness contrasted with white
snow and corn fields, I felt compelled to investigate this imagery
in collage. I also feel crows may be my spirit animal. Like me,
they are loud, bossy, attracted to shiny objects and always vying
for attention.
Flower collages are a direct response to the glorious riot of color I
enjoy in my flower beds each summer.
My work involves Gelli printing, drawing, painting, found objects,
words and imagery. Intrigued by translucency, layering media,
and working on colored ground, I anticipate the viewer will be
drawn in both figuratively and literally by virtue of the scale,
texture and content of the images.
Generally, I work on several pieces at a time, each piece
influencing the others. Layers of foundation paper are glued
down, upon which torn and cut printed paper created by myself
are then collaged on. Lastly, acrylic paint or drawing media
complete the final layers.
Short quote
“I cannot live without making art, it is in my heart and breath. The adventure is wild,
challenging, heartbreaking and glorious. I thrive on the passion that is the creative
endeavor.”
