Explore the art of creating naturally dyed speckled wool yarn. Be it wildly colored or a few speckles here and there, learn to harness the beauty of plants and flowers to imprint natural colors onto yarn. This hands-on class will guide you through some basics of natural dye for protein fibers and the process to eco-print before you dive into your own take-home creation. Discover the joy of playing with natural color to transform plain wool into unique, eco-friendly masterpieces ready to knit or crochet!

As a speaker for almost 20 years, Missy has taught dozens of workshops on a wide range of subjects, from business to holistic spiritual education, to food and agriculture. In addition to growing vegetables and raising poultry, Missy is a farmer who raises fiber sheep and grows most of her dye materials, weaving together her passions for sustainable food and fiber production.

Missy infuses all the events at her farm with education—from school group tours to farm dinners & holiday events. She has also taught at local venues, including the WNY Fiber Arts Festival, local public libraries & schools, Be Healthy Institute, Buffalo is Creative, ECC’s Culinary Program, and the Erie County Fair.

Learn to Spin on a Drop Spindle

Try your hand a this ancient craft that’s still relevant today. All students will have a drop spindle to use and a large supply of wool to make mistakes with.

Intro to Wet Felting: Creating a Felted Flower

Learn the art of wet felting with Roycroft Artist, Suzanne O’Brien. Suzanne will guide you through a step by step process of how to create a beautiful felted flower with just wool fibers, soap, water and a little agitation!

Learn to Weave: Deconstructed

Learn the essential building blocks of weaving, such as warping and materials selection, setting up a loom and best practices. Beginners will gain an understanding of fundamental tapestry weaving basics and how to break with traditional weaving to “sculpt” with weft under the guidance of Tami Fuller, our keynote speaker.

Woven Tray

This is a great little tray with many uses. It is lovely as a breadbasket, fruit basket, or project basket. I use mine as a hold-all as I work on felting projects. The tray is easy to make, the rim is glued, so it makes a good intro to weaving baskets.

Paint with Wool for Kids

Did you know you can use needle felt needle to “paint” designs on a flat surface, making basic fabric a coloring page? In this class, we’ll learn how to do just that, using cotton muslin stretched under tension, just like a canvas.

Know Your Wool: A Primer in Woolcraft

Longwool, short staple, woolen, worsted, carded, combed, hand, roving vs top, from the fold, in the grease – what is a diz? Do I really need a flick carder? What are neps? Silk, bamboo, wool and artificials versus natural…There is so much that goes into working with wool! Learn the basics of fiber prep and have common questions answered, like when you should card and when you should comb, how to handle each process and the tools and best practices associated with each prep and why woolen versus worsted matters.

Felting on the Flat

Create an image of landscape suitable for framing using naturally dyed wool as your “paint”. Students will learn the basics of needle felting as we blend colors, layer directly on to a flat surface or create a pre-felted piece to transfer to the canvas.  All materials are provided including a piece of handcrafted felt as “canvas”, natural dyed wool for felting, felting needles, and felting base. Ideas and inspiration will also be provided if needed.

Circular Weaving: Double Hoops (1)

Enjoy a unique spin on traditional circular weaving by using two hoops. We’ll learn how to warp this circle-within-a-circle then walk through a few basic weaving stitches to make it your own. Perfect for beginners and anyone who wants to give this unique twist a whirl! Yarn and roving in a variety of colors will be provided.
