Musicians of Ma’alwyck: a concert honoring veterans called Under Four Flags

May 10 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Free and Open to Public

On Saturday, May 30th at 7pm at the Village Hall of Wyoming, 9 S. Academy St. The Capital Region based ensemble will perform a concert honoring veterans called Under Four Flags. The program features a musical score by Max Caplan for the 1918 silent film, Under Four Flags, chronicling the Allies’ efforts in World War I; a rare surviving document. The program will also feature a piano quintet, To A Soldier, by violinist and composer Samuel Gardner, dedicated to the memory of violinist David Hochstein (namesake of Rochester’s Hochstein School of Music), who was killed on October 19th 1918 at the Somme. Gardner recorded for Thomas Edison and won the first Pulitzer Prize for music composition with his 1918 string quartet.

The Musicians of Ma’alwyck’s mission is to tell history through music. The historical society has been fortunate to collaborate with them using its extensive collection of memorabilia from performances organized by Lydia Avery Coonley Ward during the 1910s. This concert portrays the first world war and its local effects and melds them into a program that shows how the world war affected, even the tiniest of places. Holding the performance in the historically significant and acoustically satisfying Wyoming Village Hall adds to the heft of the presentation.
