INTRODUCTION TO AFRO-CARIBBEAN PERCUSSION

$5An introductory community workshop exploring the Afro-Puerto Rican style of music called Bomba will be held at the ACWC, Wednesday, September 4, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Facilitated by Keaton and Miranda Rood, participants ages 10 and up are invited to participate. The workshop will teach this exciting style of dance-drum music, made up of infectious rhythms, songs, and dance from Puerto Rico. The introductory workshops will kick off a series of 90 minute workshops to take place Wednesdays in September. Each week, participants will learn one or two Bomba rhythms, songs to accompany each rhythm, and culturally and musically relevant information. As the workshop progresses, participants will learn to perform Bomba in a culturally authentic way, as it is performed throughout Puerto Rica and the Puerto Rican diaspora. Rhythms explored will include Sicá, Yubá, Holandés, Cuembé and Seis Corrido.
Come, bring a friend, or a child, or a sibling, and learn to “Bombear” in Wyoming County! Cost to participate in the September 4th kick-off session is limited to $5.00 per person or $10.00 maximum per family. There is a limited number of drums available, to participants are encouraged to bring their own Barril de Bomba, Conga or Djembe drum if they have one.
